Ross Fan Art Easy to Draw People as Wolves

Callum Wilson says he's keeping his latest injury setback in perspective after a hamstring tweak ruled him out of Sunday's draw with Newcastle.

After missing half of last season, Wilson scored twice in his opening three games but faces another couple of weeks out with this new issue.

"It's frustrating because I try and do everything right," he said on this week's edition of The Footballer's Football Podcast. "I don't think there's anyone more professional than me in the dressing room and I do everything right.

"I put my heart and soul into staying fit but if this is it and I end up playing 35 games this year, then I'd snap your hand off.

"I'll be back in full working order very soon - I just don't want to rush or push anything."

What is Wilson's reaction to new signing Alexander Isak? And who makes his and Michail Antonio's combined Newcastle-West Ham five-a-side team? Listen to the full podcast exclusively on BBC Sounds to find out

An early contender for goal of the season witnessed at Molineux at the weekend as Allan Saint-Maximin produced a moment of magic to rescue a deserved point for the travelling Toon Army.

If those moments of magic can become more frequent and Saint-Maximin can continue the season in this blistering form, then his bold statement of wanting to become the best player in the world just might be taken a bit more seriously.

In an interview earlier this year, the Frenchman claimed he has his sights set on a Ballon d'Or - a substantial statement by a winger yet to make a senior appearance for France at the age of 25. That international appearance could well be looming, though.

Producing his best performances yet in a Newcastle shirt, including in the six-goal thriller against Manchester City, the trickster seems to have found his final product.

Saint-Maximin's numbers were never quite at the level he and his coaches knew he was capable of, but the decision-making and execution in the final third has vastly improved so far this term.

Winning the Ballon d'Or might be a step too far, but if he can continue this rich vein of form and develop consistent goal involvements, then the ceiling really is quite limitless for the enigmatic Saint-Maximin.

With time running out in the transfer window, do Newcastle still need to bring anyone in to help Saint-Maximin and his team-mates? And what about departures before Thursday's deadline? Have your say here

Eddie Howe doesn't expect any further signings from Newcastle before the transfer window shuts, despite a number of injuries to key players.

Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin are all doubts for Wednesday's trip to Anfield to face Liverpool, but Howe doesn't expect that to alter the club's transfer strategy.

When asked if he expects any more players to come in, he said: "I don't expect there to be to be honest.

"We are very pleased with the business we have done. The injuries we have are short-term so there might be a bit of short-term pain around the squad. Longer-term when those bodies are back fit I think we are very strong. That's not to say we are totally closed off. We are obviously still looking but I don't expect any major business to be done.

"We have a few injuries at the moment that's obvious. I don't think any of them are long-term except Emile Krafth. We're hopeful that we can get the main body of the team back pretty quickly but certainly for this game we are a bit stretched.

"I think we are in a stronger place. The injuries are a concern to us but we are unbeaten, the players are playing a style of football that I believe they have got confidence in. We will be extremely tested in this game and it will be a really good examination of us, but I see no reason why we shouldn't go there and give another good account of ourselves and play with no fear."

We asked for your comments after Newcastle salvaged a point in their 1-1 draw with Wolves.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Matt: The grit and determination that Newcastle had really shows what Howe has instilled in the team. It's something that is really becoming apparent this season already. This time last year, we would have lost the game after conceding first.

Thomas: 100% better than last year. Even without strongest side, we managed to dominate large parts of the game. And to come back in the 90th minute shows how determined the players are. And what a finish by Maxi!!!

Ian: Lack of quality in depth of the squad was evident. Wood is a workhorse but does not provide a threat. Lack of creativity was a concern with Longstaff looking out of sorts. Maybe exertions against Manchester City and the need to use some first-team players to overcome Tranmere is taking a toll. Recruitment needed for one more attacking midfielder!

George: Need quality in the squad, not just in the starting line-up. Injuries have already hit the squad with key players out. If it wasn't for Eddie Howe, we would have been looking at a loss. We need to sign quality if we want to continue our momentum. Loaning or signing free agents could be a good way to add much needed depth.

Mark: I think we missed Bruno. We played well - Wolves are a dangerous team on the break and we dealt with that threat pretty well. Maxi's goal was sublime and I thought we would go on to win the game after it. Elliot Anderson is definitely one to watch develop this season.

Newcastle forward Allan Saint-Maximin will be on the radar of some of the top clubs, according to former Wales defender Neil Taylor.

Saint-Maximin has impressed during Newcastle's unbeaten start to the season, with two assists and a brilliant 90th-minute volley to earn Newcastle a point at Molineux on Sunday.

Taylor expects both Saint-Maximin and Newcastle to continue to shine.

"Newcastle deserved something against Wolves," Taylor told the BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "They played really, really well. They are a massive threat.

"Saint-Maximin is a top player and someone I imagine the big clubs are keeping an eye on. He is someone that can carry the ball. And someone that can carry the ball so well and take the team up the pitch is massive.

"They have made some really good signings and, in terms of philosophies, you can see what Eddie Howe is trying to implement - a team that turns the ball over and goes forward quickly. He has a pretty big backline to make sure they do well at set-pieces.

"I think Newcastle they will do well this year; he has spent wisely."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Match of the Day:"There is a massive importance to every game, we were determined to keep our unbeaten start going - the players gave everything and never gave up, it was a great goal from Allan [Saint-Maximin] at the end.

"We chased the game very well, Wolves are a genuine counter-attacking threat, we had to control that and we were very effective in the second half. Eventually that paid off and I thought we deserved it."

On Saint-Maximin's goal:"The ball flips up in the air and I wasn't sure what he was going to do - it is a truly incredible finish, technically to control that and keep it down.

"Every game you can lose if you are not where you need to be. It took the second half to really do that, and that is why I am pleased the growth in the team continues."

On why Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimares did not feature:"Alex is a work permit issue, we are waiting for that to come through, Bruno has a slight injury and will hopefully only be out for a couple of games."

Building a successful football team requires a lot of ingredients.

Good players, clearly, are pretty essential. But so too is character – and in that sense Eddie Howe will have been as delighted with this point as he was with the one achieved against Manchester City last week.

Lacking key men and the fluency from the City game, for all the world, it looked like a defeat was on the cards.

But Newcastle, as a team, refused to accept a loss – and Alain Saint-Maximin produced a moment of inspiration.

Not every day is a great day. Sometimes, a result is all that is needed.

Today was one such day.
